Major Depressive Episode — A major depressive episode is a clinically significant pattern of depressive symptoms occurring within the same two-week period. The pattern generally includes at least five qualifying symptoms, with depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure among them. The symptoms must cause meaningful distress or impairment and cannot be understood adequately without considering medical, substance-related, and other psychiatric causes. — Depressive Disorders
