You were deceived by a sophisticated criminal.” While a chatbot like “Sam” can be programmed to say these words, the delivery lacks the essential weight of human conviction. As Perry (2023) and Shteynberg et al. (2024) argue, AI-generated empathy can feel empty upon reflection. For a victim drowning in self-blame, a human peer’s shared gasp of understanding or a simple, “I can’t imagine how you feel, but I’m here,” carries a validating power that a programmed response cannot replicate. The human peer’s own potential vulnerability and shared humanity create a relational bridge that the AI, with its perfect, un-lived empathy, cannot cross. Based on the Li et al. study and the psychology of trauma, chatbots are likely ill-suited as a primary support mechanism in the immediate aftermath of a scam. However, they may have utility in other, more ancillary roles:
- A Triage Tool: An AI could serve as a first point of contact on a support website, providing immediate, 24/7 information and directing the user to human resources. It can answer factual questions (“What do I do now?”) without the emotional weight of a human conversation.
- A Supplemental Journaling Aid: For a victim who is not yet ready to speak to anyone, a structured AI interaction might be a step up from a blank page. Conclusion: The Irreplaceable Human Element
The study by Li et al. (2026) provides crucial empirical evidence for a truth that trauma survivors and support professionals have long known intuitively: genuine connection heals. While technology can simulate empathy, it cannot replicate the shared vulnerability, mutual responsiveness, and embodied validation that are the hallmarks of a human relationship. A Note About Labeling!
We often use the term ‘scam victim’ in our articles, but this is a convenience to help those searching for information in search engines like Google. It is just a convenience and has no deeper meaning. If you have come through such an experience, YOU are a Survivor! It was not your fault. You are not alone! Axios!
Statement About Victim Blaming
Some of our articles discuss various aspects of victims. This is both about better understanding victims (the science of victimology) and their behaviors and psychology. This helps us to educate victims/survivors about why these crimes happened and to not blame themselves, better develop recovery programs, and to help victims avoid scams in the future. At times this may sound like blaming the victim, but it does not blame scam victims, we are simply explaining the hows and whys of the experience victims have.
These articles, about the Psychology of Scams or Victim Psychology – meaning that all humans have psychological or cognitive characteristics in common that can either be exploited or work against us – help us all to understand the unique challenges victims face before, during, and after scams, fraud, or cybercrimes. These sometimes talk about some of the vulnerabilities the scammers exploit. Victims rarely have control of them or are even aware of them, until something like a scam happens and then they can learn how their mind works and how to overcome these mechanisms.
