# Can You Be Scammed?

A Susceptibility Self-Assessment · Based on the SCARS Relationship Scams Formula · 32 questions

## Your Privacy Is Protected

#### We never see your identity

Your responses are processed in your browser and your email. Only you see any identifying information about you.

#### De-identified data supports research

With your permission and your identity removed, your de-identified answers are sent to the SCARS Institute for scientific research only. Data is never shared with third parties.

#### Keep your own copy

When you finish, you can save, email, or print your results on your own device — to keep, or to share with your therapist or mental health professional.

The SCARS Institute provides this tool to help you see how common scam techniques would work on you, and where to build protection. You can save it to share the results with your therapist or mental health professional.

I give my consent for my fully de-identified assessment data to be used for research purposes only. I understand that all personal identifiers have been removed from my responses, this information will not be shared with any third parties, and my participation is completely voluntary.

## Before You Begin

Almost everyone believes they could never be scammed. That belief is exactly what scammers count on. The SCARS Institute Relationship Scams Formula is blunt about it: the formula works on everyone who has not yet built deliberate protective habits. This short assessment estimates how well those techniques would work on you right now.

Answer quickly and truthfully about how you generally are, not how you think you ought to be. There are no right answers, and trying to guess the safe answer will only make your result less accurate. Some questions may seem to have nothing to do with scams. Answer them anyway, as candidly as you can.

Use a 1 to 5 scale for each statement:

- **1** Strongly Disagree
- **2** Disagree
- **3** Neutral
- **4** Agree
- **5** Strongly Agree

**Please note.** This is an educational awareness tool, not a clinical or diagnostic test. It estimates how common manipulation techniques might currently work on you, based on how you answer. Susceptibility is not fixed, and it is not a measure of intelligence or worth. Scams are engineered assaults that exploit ordinary human strengths. This tool is meant to show you where to build habits, not to label you.

### The levers that move you most

Ranked from strongest to weakest. Each is an ordinary human trait a scammer tries to use. Beneath each is the habit that defends it.

### What this assessment just did

Some of these questions rewarded humility over confidence, because certainty that you cannot be fooled is the single strongest risk factor. The SCARS formula is blunt about it: it works on everyone who has not made deliberate protective changes. Many other questions looked like ordinary personality questions about warmth, loyalty, urgency, or persistence. They were measuring the exact emotional levers a scammer pulls, because a scam does not defeat your intelligence, it borrows your best human qualities and turns them toward a goal you cannot see. Seeing which levers move you is not a weakness. It is the map you defend.

### Six habits that break the formula

- Confirm important claims through a separate, trusted channel you find yourself, never the one you were handed.
- Let trust build slowly, and never let it replace verification.
- Treat urgency as a tactic. A real situation survives a pause, a night's sleep, and a second opinion.
- Never let money, time, or hope already spent decide what you do next.
- Treat any request for secrecy as a reason to tell someone you trust.
- When an emergency involves someone you love, confirm it with that person directly, using a number you already have.

**Learn and get support.** Read the full formula at [the SCARS Relationship Scams Formula Checklist](https://romancescamsnow.com/dating-scams/the-scars-institute-relationship-scams-formula-checklist/). If you have been scammed, or are unsure about a situation right now, SCARS offers free support at [support.againstscams.org](https://support.againstscams.org) and counselors at [counseling.againstscams.org](https://counseling.againstscams.org). Survivors are at higher risk of being targeted again, which makes these habits especially worth building.

**Save your results before leaving this page.** Reloading or closing will erase them.
